EMIRATES BJJ TEAM NEWS - JAPAN - USA:

Fighters take on the world
Amith Passela

A hardy bunch of Emirati jiu-jitsu fighters are aiming to build on the success of the recent World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup in the national capital by being the first UAE national team to participate in an overseas competition.

The tour party for two competitions in Tokyo and Las Vegas is made up of 14 Emirati fighters while the instructors are headed by the three-time world champion Carlos Santos, Olavo Abreu and Suyam Queiroz.

The team will travel to Japan for the Rickson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Cup in Tokyo on June 28.

They then head to New York for a week’s training with the renowned Renzo Gracie – a practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu – before the Grapplers Quest UFC 100 championship in Mandala Bay, Las Vegas on July 10-11.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Emirati fighters,” said Santos, the man behind the setting up of a base for Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Abu Dhabi.

“Taking part in such established competitions will provide the national team the experience of facing some of the best fighters around the world. It is part of their preparation for next year’s second world professional championships in Abu Dhabi.

“One of our objectives is also to showcase the Emirati fighters and promote Abu Dhabi as the world capital of the professional jiu-jitsu. Abu Dhabi will host the next two world professional championships after the success of the inaugural event last month.”

The team include those who participated in the inaugural world professional championship in Abu Dhabi in early May.

Among them are Tareq al Ketbi and Faisal al Ketbi, the gold medallists in the second tier competition of the world professional championship. Santos feels the entire squad have the potential to win at the highest levels.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport emphasising ground-fighting techniques and submissive holds.

“Brazilian jiu-jitsu or [simply] jiu-jitsu has been practised for a long time in the Middle East but the lack of competitions had stunted the growth,” said Santos. “When I first started coaching alone, the response was overwhelming, and the promise of competitions encouraged those already in training to get more active.

“The Abu Dhabi Cup became an instant hit. The numbers began to swell in no time for the second year’s competition and continue to grow. I had to bring in more instructors to handle the demand. I started alone and now have 25 instructors to assist me, including those who are coaching in the schools.

“Abu Dhabi will be the venue for the world professional championships for the next three years. The inaugural event at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Stadium was a massive success and the next two staging of the event is going to be definitely bigger and better.”

What is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu means "The Soft Art". It was the ancient martial art of the Japanese samurais many centuries ago. With the change of times, the samurais were no longer needed and left aside while their Jiu-Jitsu was forgotten. Master Jigoro Kano reshaped the art, emphasizing takedowns and immobilizations and turning it into the now popular sport of judo.
Luckily in the early 1900s one Jiu-Jitsu master called Maeda Koma was sent to Brazil to lead a Japanese immigrant mission. After being helped by Brazilian diplomat Gastao Gracie, Koma decided to show his gratitude by teaching the art of Jiu-Jitsu to his sons. That’s when the legacy of the Gracie Family and the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started.
Carlos learned directly from the Japanese master and in 1925 opened the first Gracie Academy in Rio de Janeiro. Helio, the youngest and smallest of the Gracie brothers, adapted the old Japanese techniques to his small body and developed new ones as well. He created a highly effective style of ground fighting based on leverage instead of power.

BRASIL NUMBER 1 IN OCEAN RACE:

TRIBUTES FOR TORBEN AND CREW
Those guys have all the right in the world to be proud of their effort. I think the fleet is in awe of how they sailed their boat: they are simply better than all of us.
The tributes to Ericsson 4 have been pouring from rival skippers and sailors after Torben Grael's formidable team claimed the Volvo Ocean Race with an in-port race and leg to spare.

Torben Grael's crew established a 13-point lead over PUMA with just 12 to play for after last night's third place finish in leg nine.

It was their 18th top three spot from 22 scoring opportunities, but the brilliance of their results is best seen in the details. They have won five of nine legs - including three of the last four - and three of seven scoring gates. Both rate as the best in the fleet, while inshore, despite trailing Telefonica Blue, they have won twice in six tries.

Here the teams chasing them have their say on the 10th winner of this event.

12 TRIALS, 1 WORLD

GM #147: Jiu-Jitsu for the joy of the Royal Family
Run for your GMA member academy and read about all the best that happened in Abu Dhabi at the World Pro Cup

Jiu-Jitsu for the joy of the royal family

40 years ago, Abu Dhabi was nothing more than a fishing village. Four decades on, the capital of the United Arab Emirates could be called the new jewel of Arabia. Oil money brought with it development that meshed perfectly with Middle Eastern tradition. The harmony prevalent in the UAE is also the result of a royal family illuminated and attentive to what best the world has to offer without forsaking traditional customs.

Among these benefices is Jiu-Jitsu, introduced to the country in 1997. In 2009, we reach the pinnacle. During the first two days of May, the first World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup took place in Abu Dhabi. “It’s a dream come true,” in the words of the event’s organizer, Carlao Santos, a black belt who seven years ago went to teach the royal family and now leads an unprecedented endeavor to spread Jiu-Jitsu to the masses, with class taught to over three thousand children in schools, for example.

GRACIEMAG disembarked in Abu Dhabi along with a cast of notable aces of world Jiu-Jitsu. There were Marcelo Garcia, Rafael Lovato Jr., Fabio Gurgel, Alexandre de Souza, Rubens Charles “Cobrinha”, Braulio Estima, Rafael and Guilherme Mendes and many others. After the disputes were all done, though, it was Tarsis Humphreys who shone the most, with gold in the absolute black belt category, in his category and 14 thousand dollars in his pocket. But the WPJJC was much more than just that. It was held at a first-rate venue where tennis stars Federer and Nadal once performed; present was Sheikh Mohammed, prince of Abu Dhabi, in the pulpit of honor and lots of emotions from the Middle Eastern champions. All that you will find in over 15 illustrated pages with a battery of images of the bouts as well as beautiful Abu Dhabi and its unique mix of Middle Eastern tradition and ultra-modernity.

Meanwhile, in the United States two events shook up the Jiu-Jitsu calendar. In Manhattan and Los Angeles, the NY Open and the American Cup proved there’s no greater program than to grab a gi and hit a competition. It doesn’t matter what belt or age the practitioner. In the Big Apple, Lucas Lepri and Gregor Gracie took the spotlight. In California, the number of unknowns at the party proves just how Jiu-Jitsu is gaining ground at all four corners of the globe with every day.

During a stop-through in Rio de Janeiro, modern Jiu-Jitsu’s birthplace, we found Hillary Williams, a purple belt from Little Rock, Arkansas, who like any good American stuck an idea in her head and saw it out till the end. During a three-week tropical adventure in Brazil, the valiant gringa toured through nearly every gym in the city. She learned a lot, had her share of setbacks, questioned what she thought she knew, but also had a heck of a good time. When she left, she realized she is living proof of Jiu-Jitsu’s strength in the lives of those who embrace it. At home, she put it all on paper and sent it in to GRACIEMAG. Read it and get inspired.

In the monthly column, Martin Rooney talks of the dead weight we carry around with us. The physical conditioning coach to some of Jiu-Jitsu and MMA’s biggest stars shows how there’s a good deal more stuff holding your development back than you’d imagine. And he points out how get rid of it.

In the section dedicated to the GRACIE MAGAZINE ASSOCIATION members, check out the report from a student who through Jiu-Jitsu overcame great hardship and even helped his master face down his own challenges. Learn a sweep from Braulio Estima. Find out about Abu Dhabi’s tiny warriors. Hear about an associate who was caught off guard by Renzo Gracie. And check out our associates shining at the NY Open.

And there’s even Xande Ribeiro winning in MMA in the Intro and GRACIEMAG recalling in Anthology the early days of Jiu-Jitsu in the Emirates through the trajectory of Sheikh Tahnoon’s adoptive sons, who turned champions at the World Cup JJ Pro.
Enjoy your reading till next month’s issue with complete coverage of the Worlds 2009.

ALLIANCE N 1:

Alliance dominates the Worlds
GMA team got its 2nd teams title in a row

Gurgel carries Cobrinha in one of Alliance's many celebrations at the Worlds / Ivan Trindade
Fabio Gurgel is already back in Sao Paulo after a long journey to win the 2009 World Championship, in Long Beach. “I just stepped in at home, thank God,” said the black belt leader of Alliance to GRACIEMAG.com.

Alliance conquered its second team title in a row beating its own scoring record (last year it tallied 117 and in 2009 121), Cobrinha was crowned four-time featherweight champion, Langhi captured his first, Bruno Malfacine “put an end to the featherweight curse,” Marcelo Garcia did well in his return to gi competition closing out with Sergio Moraes… The results couldn’t have been much better.

In the opinion of Gurgel, however, they could have. In the following interview GRACIEMAG.com readers will see how the general didn’t hide his sadness for Lucas Lepri’s loss to Gilbert Durinho and Tarsis Humphrey’s defeat at the hands of Romulo Barral.

GRACIEMAG.com: What’s your assessment of Alliance’s performance this Worlds?

Fabio Gurgel: Hard to say. We had a close to perfect championship. I think not everyone’s going to win all the time and we didn’t expect that. But I think we went in with a strong team with a great chance of winning again. We trained a lot for it. We’ve been training and doing physical conditioning work since last Worlds, because making it is one thing, maintaining it is another. I had to build the athletes’ consciousness, make everyone train a lot and keep up a good competition rhythm. To answer your question, I think our disappointment had to do with Lucan Lepri, who was a firm favorite to win, and ended up losing a match we didn’t expect him to. But everyone else lived up to expectations. It was a nearly perfect championship.

GM: How does the team feel having conquered its second?

FG: Marvelous. It’s recognition of the arduous work everyone’s been doing, the team’s dedication, the organization, folks believing more and more in the work we’re doing, everyone participating. I think Alliance is a model of good organization. Of course there’s no formula. Truth is we have a formula that works for us but might not for other teams. We broke our own record, managed to keep in ahead with a good lead in points.

GM: Last year Alliance scored 117 points and second place scored 66. This year you went up to 121 and Gracie Barra scored 88. What are your thoughts on those results?

FG: I think Alliance and Gracie Barra are the most organized academies doing the most global work, that’s why they end up standing out more than the others. Since the beginning we’ve known it would be a tight dispute.

GM: What is responsible for the increase in points?

FG: 117 to 121 is real close. But we did our job just like last year, the difference being that in 2008 we went in with the motivation of conquering the title we hadn’t won in 10 years, and this year we came in as favorites. Alliance is the only team to make it to the winners’ stand in all the main championships. I like to joke that we’re used to playing away from home, because we don’t have championships where we have our main gyms. There aren’t any in Sao Paulo, nor in Atlanta. So we travel to Rio to compete at the Brazilian Nationals, we travel to Europe, the USA. We’re always traveling, but we manage to get on the winners’ stand at all of them.

GM: Is any athlete particularly happy about their performance?

FG: It’s hard to speak for the athlete, but I think they all did well. But two people didn’t yet have the title and deserved to, and they were Michael Langhi and Bruno Malfacine. I think Michael, to tell you the truth, is now Jiu-Jitsu’s athlete of the year. He fought in everything in gi competition this year and won all the main titles. Another is Tarsis Humphreys, who had a match with Romulo Barral that I feel he won, from the zero to zero score there’s no way you can call Barral the champion, so it was a bit hard to swallow that silver medal. But as I said: you can’t win them all. To illustrate how things are. Vella beat Braulio in the same position Tarsis was in with Barral and the judges gave the match to Vella in one and Barral in the other. But those things happen when you have a zero-zero score, we can’t complain.

GM: You recently told GRACIEMAG.com you would like to see Marcelo Garcia training in the gi instead of MMA. What do you make of his return?

FG: Marcelo has always been a reference within Alliance. He’s been with the team since the split-up; he carried the “boat” on his own till now. He joined the team already at top level, already strong and everyone had the joy of seeing him fight. I always took the stance that he should not have left, but that was his personal decision. And now he’s back and really motivated, happy to return to competition. We want him to feel at home. I think he had a marvelous championship and Sergio Moraes did too. We have a great middleweight duo that’s going to make a lot of noise for some time.

GM: What are the next steps for the team?
FG: We're going to take off the gi for a while, as we have ADCC coming up in three months, so we'll put some emphasis on the ADCC and then the Brazilian Team championship and keep up the work. Our plan is to get better and better, stronger and stronger and more organized.

BRASIL GREEN WORLD CUP:

Brazil eager to stage 'green' World Cup

Dubai: Brazil, the nursery of football talent, was to unveil more than just venues when the 12 cities hosting the 2014 Fifa World Cup were to be made public by Fifa late last night.

The Brazilian government headed by President Lula da Silva has put together a campaign for hosting a "green World Cup" in 2014.

Last night's announcement follow's the world governing body's extension of the deadline by two weeks. Fifa had originally wanted just 10 host cities, but Brazil made an appeal and got another two based on its vision of staging a "green" World Cup.

Five cities - Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre - are already guaranteed host status. Another 12 are vying for the remaining seven places, including Curitiba and Florianopolis in the south; Campo Grande, Cuiaba and Gioania in the mid-west; Salvador, Natal, Recife and Fortaleza in the north-east, along with the Amazonian cities of Rio Branco, Manaus and Belem.

Rio Branco, Manaus and Belem look strong due to their campaigns built on eco-tourism, but they will surely find it difficult to get past what has been achieved by Campo Grande, the capital of the state Mato Grosso do Sul, nicknamed Cidade Morena (Brown City) due to the richness of its soil.

Campo Grande is offering the greenest credentials of any venue. It already has an agreement with Masdar City in the UAE. This development is working alongside Campo Grande to make their potential World Cup stadium, owned and housed within the local university, the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste arena.

The city council is going a step further to make the World Cup an affair to remember - they will ask each fan visiting Campo Grande to plant a tree with their name at the base as a remembrance of the great event.

President Lula da Silva has thrown his weight behind such an initiative.

"Fifa has a responsibility now. If they don't make Campo Grande one of the venues, they will have to explain why," he told the local media recently.

The Campo Grande council has begun talks with the Maldives over a partnership that will highlight their plight to the world. The Maldives are threatened by rising sea levels.

Campo Grande has an excellent location as it borders five Brazilian states and is also near Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay. It also has a ready-made 45,000 capacity stadium and a Unesco World Heritage Site in Pantanal.

G MAGAZINE 147:

Jiu-Jitsu for the joy of the royal family

PRESALE: GRACIEMAG 147
Jiu-Jitsu for the joy of the royal family

During
the first two days of May, the first World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup took place in Abu Dhabi.

WAM Abu Dhabi, 4th May 2009 (WAM) -- General HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, received today UAE winners of second silver rank and first at Arab level of the first World Championship of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for professionals. The UAE fighters snatched 18 medals of which five were gold.

Mohammad attends final of jiu-jitsu championship

Abu Dhabi: General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, attended here on Saturday evening the final of the first World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The tournament kicked off on Friday at the International Lawn Tennis Complex of the Zayed Sports City.

His sudden arrival at the event encouraged the UAE fighters and motivated Yahya Mansour and Faisal Kitbi to snatch gold in their various divisions.

According to the overall results, the Brazilian team emerged champions with 20 medals, including nine gold.

The UAE team was second with 18 medals, including five gold, while the United States placed third with six medals, including one gold. The final day of the two-day championship attracted a large crowd, including a number of top UAE officials.

Shaikh Zayed Bin Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Shaikh Zayed Bin Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan were also present for the thrilling final.

In a statement, the chairman of the organising committee and board chairman of the Armed Forces Officers Club, Lieutenant General Mohammad Hilal Al Ka'abi, praised the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince for his unstinting support for the championship.

Tarsis comes up spades in absolute

First day of World Cup JJ Pro is over -- but not without lots of action and upsets
By Luca Atalla

Friday night was going great for Braulio Estima. On the first day of the World Pro JJ Cup, in Abu Dhabi, the Brazilian from Pernambuco state met with success after success, especially against opponents from rival Alliance. His first victim was Fabio Gurgel, in the under 95kg category. A sweep early on guaranteed Carcara’s move into the semis, which will be disputed this Saturday. The next challenge was the absolute.

After going past Rafael Lovato Jr, Braulio was spared a tough Alexandre de Souza, who wasn’t feeling well and dropped out of the dispute. The substitution, however, came as bad news for Estima. His next adversary was none other than Marcelo Garcia, back in sport Jiu-Jitsu after a two-year lay-off. Marcelo had just finished off Braulio’s brother, Victor, with a choke from the back. In a sort of familial revenge, Carcara gave a choke right back, but by way of a slick triangle a little over two minutes into the bout.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the bracket, Alliance was ruling the roost. Gabriel Vella and Tarsis Humphreys tore through adversaries until meeting in the semifinal. Tarsis overcame Tiago Braga and eeked by Zumbi Lara. In the quarters, Tarsis overcame a game Bento Ribeiro before coming up against Vella, who was coming off of wins over Anthony Peroshi, Edmilson Conceicao and Victor Costa. The semifinal between teammates didn’t happen and the decision as to who would go ahead took into account the last Capital Challenge championship, held in Jordan, at the end of 2008. On the occasion, Tarsis opened the way for Vella.

When the final began, a minority among those present at the Tennis Court da Zayed Sports City believed the Paulista could triumph over the absolute European champion. And Tarsis knew it. “I know my recent results were not ideal, but I suffered injuries in 2008 and needed to reformulate my training regimen. But I always believed in my Jiu-Jitsu,” assessed Humphreys, revealing how he paid closer attention to physical preparation: “I started training in Sao Paulo with Edmilson Dantas, who is the coach of Brazil’s Olympic weight lifting team.”

In the final, Braulio took the lead with a sweep, but was unable to develop his game, trapped in the Fabio Gurgel student’s formidable guard. A foot attack yielded an advantage for Tarsis, who needed two points to take the lead. With only 40 seconds left, Braulio was punished for a lack of combativeness and needed to get moving. That opened up the room Humphreys needed to go for a sweep, with less the ten seconds remaining. The strategy paid off and the ref ended the match designating two points and the win to Tarsis by advantage. In good cheer, Gurgel joked: “I told Braulio his house would cave in at the worst moment.”

The Pernambucan complained about the refereeing, for the penalty incurred and for thinking the sweep had not been stabilized for three seconds. But, in the end, he recognized he didn’t put up in the final what he’d been showing throughout the day: “I had everything under control throughout the championship, accept in the final five seconds.”

The World Pro JJ Cup carries on this Sunday, with the semifinals and finals of each category, for all belt groupings, white to blue, as well as purple, brown and black. Stay tuned to GRACIEMAG.com for find out about everything going on in Abu Dhabi.

NEW ERA:

New era for jiu jitsu starting in Abu Dhabi
Zoe Griffiths

Usually more at home in the bustling Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro or the spiritual hills of Japan, jiu jitsu is swapping its traditional roots and setting up camp in the UAE.

The first tournament to pay prize money, the World Professional Jiu Jitsu Cup takes place this weekend in the capital, with an opening ceremony and qualifiers on Thursday followed by two days of competition.

Fighters from across the world have competed in World Qualifiers in Brazil, the USA, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia to book their place in the tournament. More than 30 different countries will be represented across all divisions (black, brown, purple, blue and white belts) including competitors from the Emirates Jiu Jitsu Team in the blue belt division.

With a prize purse of US$111,000 (Dh407,700) up for grabs, the tournament marks a new era for jiu jitsu, which until now has been a mainly amateur sport.

The tournament is the brainchild of three-times jiu jitsu World Champion, Brazilian Carlos Santos, who is intent on bringing jiu jitsu to the masses in the UAE.

“Before this jiu jitsu was amateur, after this tournament it will be professional,” said Santos.

Santos said the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, could help the sport develop in the Emirates.

“Now we can bring tournaments like this to the UAE and develop jiu jitsu further across all levels – from schools to the national team,” he said. Santos has worked to develop jiu jitsu in the Emirates since arriving in Abu Dhabi nearly seven years ago. As well as bringing the World Professional Jiu Jitsu Cup to the capital, Santos has also worked with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council to introduce jiu jitsu to schools, culminating in a inter-schools tournament.

Among the big names of the jiu jitsu world competing in this weekend’s tournament, at Zayed Sports City Tennis Complex, are the Brazilian fighters Marcelo Garcia, Brauilo Estima, Rubens Charles and Robson Moura.

WORLD PRO LIVE IN TV:

World Cup Pro: Teammates face off in semis
Finals broadcast live in Abu Dhabi on Sport TV

With the list of athletes ever more homogenous for the World Cup Pro, next Arabic weekend (Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2), organizer Carlao Santos made a pronouncement on the theme raised by GRACIEMAG.com this week:

“Athletes from the same academy face each other in the semifinal. I had already decided on that, because it happened that a final at the Brazilian trials didn’t take place.”

To guarantee it, Carlao will not oblige two athletes from the same academy on the same end of the bracket to face each other. Rather, if both make it to the semifinal, the bracket will be changed to put them against each other.

As GRACIEMAG editor Marcelo Dunlop recalled, “it’s a system kind of like soccer’s Copa Libertadores, where matchups are changed should two teams from the same country make it to the semis.”
“We can’t risk not having finals,” claims Carlao, justifying his case: Abu Dhabi Sport TV, the main network in the region, is promoting the event with a number of advertisements, and will broadcast live all the final fights.”

The competition distributing 111 thousand dollars in prize money to be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, has already confirmed the names of such world champions as Fabio Gurgel, Marcelo Garcia, Braulio Estima, Rubens Cobrinha, Robson Moura, Rafael Lovato, among others.

Mohammed bin Zayed receives Jiu Jitsu Champions

Mohammed bin Zayed receives Jiu Jitsu Champions
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces has received at the Sea Palace 41 boys who are the champions of the first Abu Dhabi Schools Brazilian Jiu Jitsu championship.

Sheikh Mohammed, who expressed happiness on the positive outcome of the Jiu Jitsu program, congratulated the boys for their success and encouraged them to continue with the sport in the years ahead.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is one of Sheikh Mohammed's special initiatives and is being held under the patronage of his son, Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Zayed bin Mohamed Al Nahyan also met with the finalists of the schools competition, and has himself participated in the sport over the course of many years.

The visit to Sheikh Mohammed's majlis was a special reward for the grade 6 and 7 students who had gained first, second and third places in their bouts at the finals in Abu Dhabi. The students were excited and honored to meet Sheikh Mohammed. They were accompanied to the meeting by Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of Abu Dhabi Education Council, Mohammed Salem Al Dhahiri, Director of Abu Dhabi Education Zone and Carlos Santos, Head Coach of the Emirates Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team and Project Director of the program. Several Jiu Jitsu instructors also attended.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu finals took place at Abu Dhabi Secondary School where the best 144 grade 6 and 7 students from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia took part in the competition.

The Jiu Jitsu program was implemented in selected government schools this year. Over the last month, students have competed in regional finals in each education zone. The best 12 students from each of the 12 participating schools were selected to meet in the finals of the tournament under the watchful eye of Carlos Santos and his professional team of highly qualified instructors.

The bouts involved two minutes of high energy physical effort with no kicking or punching, but plenty of grappling. The winner of each bout was the contestant who scores the most points or forces his opponent to concede defeat.

Students fight according to weight with "roosters" and "super featherweights" weighing in at 28kg - 32 kg, "middle" and "medium heavy" weighing in at 40 kg - 45 kg, and the "super super heavy" and "big heavy" weighing in between 52 kg - 54 kg. No matter how small or big the boys are, the competition is intense, and each bout is keenly contested.

Commenting on the development, Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of ADEC, expressed great satisfaction with the achievement. "I was impressed with how well the Jiu Jitsu program was organized. The boys were focused and fought with passion. They were thrilled with the visit to Sheikh Mohammed and this will spur others to join the program next year." Mohammed Salem Al Dhahiri congratulated the trainers on their dedication and commitment," he said.

"The trainers make sure the bouts are fair and the boys don't get hurt. They encourage each of the contestants to do their best and are often seen encouraging the boys. It's like a family. Everybody works together for each other," he explained.

Santos thanked HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his vision and Abu Dhabi Education Council for its ongoing support. "My team of trainers has been working with the boys for more than eight months and the boys are progressing very well. They each have special kimonos and now know the basics of the sport. Our goal is for the boys to enjoy the sport and to progress through the different coloured belts. The visit to Sheikh Mohammed gave the boys added incentive to continue with the program and to reach new heights in the sport. We hope to double the number of participating schools next year," he stated.

Parents, too, were impressed with the program. One father from the military said, "My son has been part of the program since the beginning. He enjoys it immensely. He can't wait for the Jiu Jitsu session to arrive and on that day he leaves our house to school with a spring in his step. I believe Jiu Jitsu has changed his attitude toward school and he is now much more positive thanks to the program." WAM/SA

9 DAYS:

GURGEL AND BRAULIO:

Braulio and Gurgel comment World Pro JJ Cup
Stars celebrate BJJ’s inclusion in Abu Dhabi schools

April is coming to an end and attention is turned towards the World Pro JJ Cup, a championship to be held during the first two days of May, in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. Two of the biggest stars of gi competition, and whose presence at the event in the Middle East was announced first hand by GRACIEMAG.com are already speaking about the more than US$ 100 thousand up for grabs.

“I think it will be a landmark in the sport’s history, and that’s why I’m returning to compete among the adults after eight years. I can’t keep out of this one,” says the veteran.

Queried about the professionalization of the sport proposed by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Gurgel has nothing but good things to say. “It’s an excellent opportunity for Jiu-Jitsu. I hope we live up to expectations and that (professionalization) will become a reality in our sport.”

The same tone was adopted by Braulio Estima, European absolute champion in 2009. “It’s and excellent idea, something fighters have been hoping for a long time. It makes us excited and makes us dedicate ourselves to the maximum. It will be awesome. I can’t wait to step on the mat and show my Jiu-Jitsu to the Middle East and the world,” says Braulio.

Jiu-Jitsu’s inclusion in Abu Dhabi’s school curriculum also drew praise from the fighters. “I think it’s realy interesting, and I’d like the rest of the world and mainly Brazil to follow the example,” stated Braulio. “That’s the best news of all. The example to be followed by many places and to overcome the prejudice that exists regarding Jiu-Jitsu,” adds Gurgel.

GURGEL IN WORLD BJJ PRO:

Gurgel ready to another challenge

Veteran to compete at World Pro JJ Cup
The coming 29th the gang from Alliance will embark in Sao Paulo bound for Abu Dhabi, capital of the Arab Emirates. Fabio Gurgel will be going along with the troop. But this time the commander’s job won’t be restricted to shouting instructions from the edge of the fight area. Gurgel is one of those signed up in the under 95kg category of the World Pro JJ Cup, on the 1st and 2nd of May, and will fight on even terms with the young whippersnappers for his share of the US$ 111,000 in prize money to be dished out by the organization.

“I’ve been training with the kids all along and I’m going in full steam. The difference this championship is in match duration, which is six minutes instead of the usual ten. I believe that could work in my favor a bit, since I’m already used to fighting that way,” said the professor, who constantly figures in the master division of all the main competitive gi tournaments.

Just as is the case with the big competitions, Alliance is calling up its main stars. “We’re going in full blast, myself, (Rubens Charles) Cobrinha, Michael Langhi, Tarsis Humphreys, Marcelo Garcia, Antonio Batista and Gabriel Vella,” lists Gurgel.

Fabio took the opportunity to chat with GRACIEMAG.com to report on the recovery of his partner Romero Jacare, who runs Alliance in Atlanta, and was recently taken ill. “He’s already on his feet and heading training over there. Everything’s fine,” said Gurgel in closing.

ABU DHABI // The inaugural Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school championship drew an enthusiastic response from the children because of the simple fact that they were were able to take part in a competition barely six months since it was introduced in to the curriculum by the Abu Dhabi Education Zone.

The schools from Al Ain dominated proceedings. Malik bin Anas School topped the overall points table followed by the Tahnoun bin Mohammed and Al Ghaith schools in the finals at the Secondary School auditorium in the capital city on Monday.

Carlos Santos, the head coach and event manager said: “The children have taken to the sport very well and this is fantastic. We only started in 12 boys’ schools and the demand is for more. We are already working on a bigger coaching staff and are ready to go as far as possible in the development stage in all the schools.”

According to Santos, a three-times former world champion, more than 2,500 children in grades six and seven are in training in 14 schools including a couple of girls’ schools.

On the mat, the students showed a lot of promise.

Eleven-year-old Fared Khalifa of Malik bin Anas School became the youngest winner and he was already looking forward to advancing in the sport.

“I was very keen to learn when it was first introduced to the school,” he said.

“I use to play a lot of football and my interest was on that game until I found Jiu Jitsu to be more interesting. I didn’t have to wait so long to win my first competition.”

His schoolmate Khalfan Hamed had the same opinion after claiming the super-heavyweight division. “Jiu Jitsu was new and I liked it from the very first training session I attended,” he said.

“It was not difficult to learn and winning my first medallion in a sport I had only started four months ago has encouraged me to continue. I hear there are bigger events planned so I want to train harder from now on.”

After a successful first competition, Santos is already gearing up for the next event with double the participation anticipitated.

“We had 12 schools in this inaugural competition and the next will see 24,” said Santos.

“This number will keep growing until we reach every school under the Abu Dhabi Educational Council. And then we will start moving into the other emirates. There is absolutely no limit to get more schools involved.

“I am sure some of these students will graduate from the nurseries and become champions in the higher categories. And more importantly, they will certainly become fitter children and those who don’t want to be in the competitions can still keep training as a fitness sport.”
